Army warns of recruitment shortfall and tough year ahead
Army Chief Gen. Schoomaker told the Senate Armed Services Committee that the service is at serious risk of missing its goal of 80 000 recruits this year and could face the toughest recruiting environment ever next year. Despite meeting June goals, the active force remains about 7800 short of the year to date target as efforts include bonuses and revised recruitment strategies.

Congress moves to blunt Court property ruling
Lawmakers led by House Majority Leader DeLay push measures to curb the Supreme Court decision allowing municipalities to use eminent domain for private development. A 231-189 vote backed a bid by Scott Garrett to bar federal transportation funds for such lands, with Sensenbrenner urging funding be found locally.
