Longhorns and Bison Draw at San Angelo State Park
At San Angelo State Park, the American bison and Texas Longhorn herds captivate visitors daily. caretaker Bill Guffey notes the drought has stressed the land but the animals maintain their weight. He emphasizes rangeland management, herd rotation, and safety rules for feeding from behind fences. The park houses 13 bison and over 7 Longhorn cattle, with Little Chief, a 2,400-pound bull, leading the bison herd. Descendants of J. Frank Dobie’s 1920s Longhorns were added recently, with culling to preserve true horn growth.
