Bush lays groundwork in week one with education push and bipartisanship
President Bush ushers in his first week with education agenda and party outreach. He hosts freshmen at lunch in the State Dining Room and reports 11 meetings with over 90 lawmakers, 12 Senate confirmations, and chats with 12 foreign leaders. He redecorates the Oval Office, praises bipartisan aid from Sen. Zell Miller, and gains early support from Alan Greenspan on tax relief. The president and aides tout cooperation while abortion policy signals remain contentious as he bans U S foreign aid to groups involved in abortion funding. First lady Laura Bush stays largely silent as Vice President Cheney expands presence on Capitol Hill.
