Government Posts December Surplus. Q1 2002 Deficit Widens
The Treasury reports a December surplus of 26.6 billion but the first quarter of fiscal 2002 shows a 37.1 billion deficit. Spending rose 8.4 percent while revenues edged up 0.9 percent from the year before, with Bush budget plans forecasting continued deficits for the year and 2003.
