Youth rise to charity as students start their own efforts
Boston teens Dan and Betsy Nally collected 36 turkeys in 1996 and now run Turkeys R Us, moving 86 000 pounds to feed more than 150 000 people. Davidson College senior Nicholas Mantini helps Nicaraguans with education and job training while Dana Hork, a Penn alum, leads Change for Change. Youth Venture notes a surge in ideas and applications, fueled by Sept 11. A UW Madison student Claire Schmidt joins housing and environmental work. A national survey shows 83 percent of incoming freshmen volunteer in 2001. Mantini says grants and fundraising followed his return home.
