Forest Service proposes restrictions in Sierra Nevada
The Forest Service unveiled a plan to restrict logging across 11 national forests in the Sierra with protections for water wildlife and old growth areas. The 1800 page document covers about 40 percent of the Sierra and would limit logging near streams and meadows while thinning near inhabited areas to curb wildfires. Environmentalists praise the move as conservation minded while timber groups argue it ends logging and may face appeals to the Forest Service chief and court challenges.
