Brownsville police check outgoing vehicles to curb Ford thefts
Brownsville police began checking registration papers on cars leaving the United States across two bridges to Matamoros to combat a surge in Ford pickup thefts. The eight officer unit has made nine arrests since mid December and is seen as deterring many thefts as word spreads. The thefts, linked to rings operating from Houston to Matamoros, threaten insurance costs and leave owners vulnerable if the trend continues. Local police hope to expand checks to Hidalgo Reynosa crossings but jurisdiction issues block action.
