Supreme Court narrows ADA coverage for carpal tunnel case

The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that disability under the Americans With Disabilities Act must involve more than task limitations. A former Toyota worker, Ella Williams, who could perform some duties but faced restrictions, sued for reassignment, and the decision sent her case back for reconsideration. Justice Sandra Day O'Connor stated disability hinges on daily life activities and long lasting impairment. The ruling tightens how partial disabilities are evaluated and affects employee protections.

Postal chairman sees higher mail rates by June end

Washington AP. The Postal Service board chair said a deal to raise mail rates by June 30 appears likely. A 3 cent stamp rise to 37 cents and other increases are expected, with a majority of major mailers already agreeing to the plan. Some holdouts may accept or not oppose the increase. The agency aims to accelerate the September 11 rate hike due to losses from terrorism and a weak economy.

Early burst of star formation reshapes universe history

A NASA briefing on Hubble deep field findings by Kenneth Lanzetta argues that star formation began very early and surged rapidly, with activity increasing toward the universe’s first moments. The study, using 12 light filters to map 5000 galaxies, suggests the initial star burst occurred at the dawn of time, challenging existing models.
