Vermont Waste Plan Faces Legal Challenges and Expansion
Waste Lindquist anticipates legal challenges to the commission decision as construction of the landfill for 1,340 acres proceeds with first phase due by November and a second phase in 2012. Vermont pays $25 million for two commission seats but will receive only 20 percent capacity as it pursues nuclear phaseout. Opponents urge safety and viable waste solutions, while supporters including Obama favor nuclear energy as a clean option. Texas Commissioner Bob Wilson criticizes preparation and funding, warning against overextension as waste imports rise. Public Citizen hints at possible lawsuits and further remedies.
