New Year's Rose Parade takes on a new meaning

In Pasadena California the Marine Corps band and a 32 carrier flag opened the 113th Tournament of Roses Parade retooled after Sept. 11 to inspire a nation. Spectators braved cold rain as jets and a B 2 bomber escorted the route while Mary Pat Haas traveled from New York to see the Eastman Kodak float and a patriotic crowd cheered United We Stand. Ames Laboratory researchers announce the world’s first magnetic refrigerator operating at room temperature using gadolinium alloy and a permanent magnet. Scientists say it could reduce greenhouse gas use from traditional cooling methods.
