Mild Fair Weather Returns to Permian Basin

The National Weather Service in Midland forecasts mild fair conditions in the Permian Basin today and Thursday. Westerly winds ease from Tuesday’s gusts, which peaked at 58 mph and caused blowing dust. Temperatures will dip to the lower 60s today, rise to upper 60s Thursday, and reach the 70s by Saturday, with tonight in the mid-30s. Record highs and lows cited: 82 degrees in 1950 and 14 degrees in 1962.

Highs 62 today and 67 tomorrow, with overnight lows around 35 to 36. Sun sets 7:18 p.m. Tonight rises 6:48 a.m. Thursday. Precipitation year to date 42 inches.

Odessa man charged with forgery over forged check

A 22 year old Odessa man Paul David Davis was jailed on a 5000 bond after a bogus 90 check passed February 25 at an Odessa bank. Police say the check was stolen from a local resident and the charge was filed with Justice Virgil Lumpee who set bond.

Fort Stockton youth injured in truck bed fall

An eight year old Fort Stockton boy, Steven Villalba, was in guarded condition with a head injury after falling from a pickup bed during a 3 p.m. Tuesday crash on North Jackson. He was taken to Memorial Hospital, then moved to Odessa’s Medical Center Hospital, admitted 5:25 p.m. Tuesday. Refugio Martinez 31 drove the pickup. police say the boy either fell or jumped from the bed as Mrs. Martinez drove south.

Odessa Man Dies From Traffic Crash Injuries

Ty Larry Bates, 20, of 2613 San Andres, died Tuesday in Medical Center Hospital ICU after a Monday crash at West County Road and Maurice. Police say his car left the road, hit a culvert, and he was pinned until firefighters freed him. Bates was an Odessa College student and Westside Christian Church member. Funeral services were set for 4 p.m. at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home chapel with burial in Odessa Cemetery. He is survived by his parents, two brothers, a sister, and grandparents.

Texas lawmakers push tougher police brutality penalties

Deaths JAL N M services for former legislator Blocker

Services for George Blocker 65 of Jal N M a former New Mexico legislator were set for 2 p m today at First United Methodist Church Jal with burial in Prairie Haven Cemetery Hobbs under Griffin Funeral Home. He died Sunday in a Lubbock hospital born June 19 1913 in Courtney Martin County lived in Stanton before moving to New Mexico 35 years ago. He married Bess Myrick June 1 1935 in Big Spring and was active in oil ranching in Jal. He served as Lea County Commissioner chair and in the New Mexico Legislature 1957 1972. Survivors include his wife two sons Gary Blocker mayor of Jal and Chris Blocker of Jacksonville Fla three brothers three sisters four grandchildren and a nephew. Memorials to Jal First United Methodist Church or Carolyn Awbrey Cancer Fund.

Longtime Odessa figure Charles Maisel dies at 80

Charles J. Maisel 80 of 2322 Park Blvd died Tuesday night at Medical Center Hospital after illness. A WWI II and Korean War veteran and former U S Marine major, he helped found the American Legion in Paris in 1919 and served on the State Board of Trustees and Budget Committee. Graveside rites by the American Legion Friday at Hubbard-Kelly. Maisel was town crier in 1976, active in the Odessa Chamber of Commerce, SCORE, and the Founders Association, and a past Legion Post 430 commander. He was born August 12 1898 in Galveston and came to Odessa in 1949 from Borger. Survivors include his wife Ruth Brown Maisel, two sons and six grandchildren.
