The Sand Hills Hereford and Quarter Horse Show begins Tuesday afternoon at the West County Park barns in Odessa with judging of calves, steers, lambs and horses. Four Tennessee firefighters die in Cherokee forest blaze
A six man Tennessee Forest Department crew battled a fast moving forest fire on Jen kins Mountain in the Cherokee forest preserve. Firefighters Jerry Woods Bobby Simerly Herman Carden and Kenneth Pierce perished after wind whipped flames trapped them in a gorge. James O Reece and Will Simerly escaped prior to being boxed in by flame. Fire control officer Don Smith noted the rugged gorge terrain prevented quick escape. Bill Hale of WBEJ reported the men sheltered in the gorge as the fire closed in.

In Louisiana a Shreveport police chief E. G. Huckabay and deputy Maurice Miller were killed during a three hour gunbattle after a Black suspect, Man West, barricaded himself in a tenant house south of Shreveport. Rapid City, S D February 27 search planes from the Air Force and civilians scoured snow covered Black Hills for the Convair missing since Friday. The plane with six passengers and a crew of three vanished on a Los Angeles to Minneapolis route. Wyoming rescue set up at Newcastle and 50 civilian planes joined the hunt while Air Force HQ operated from Rapid City.
