An archbishop and bank official flee Rome amid pursuit by authorities. They retreat to a villa for safety inside Vatican City, avoiding arrest as the security situation develops in early reports.
A ClayDesta National Bank survey shows Odessa living costs rose 0.7 percent in January driven by higher medical, tax, transport, and home food expenses. Bank president David Jones calls the rise substantial and notes Midland and Odessa both posted notable month over month increases.
Midland prices rose 0.9 percent in January reversing December decline. Increases were led by transportation clothing taxes housing and medical costs while utilities and food at home fell. National figures marked the highest monthly gain since June 1982 with gasoline driving much of the rise. Medical expenses led Odessans with a 3.2 percent jump and taxes rose 2.8 percent for the average 1987 tax liability.
Pecos residents plan a town hall with U S Rep Ron Coleman to press for unpenning Maxey Park Zoo from federal rules following an Agriculture Department inspector visit. The May 12 inspection deadline looms, with upgrades urged including fencing updates, on site attendants, and improved feeding practices.
Stormy sailing activities involved Michael Rice and Lori Gregory as wet weather moved through Odessa. A power outage at KOCV-TV lasted 30 minutes after 5:30 p.m. Thunderstorms caused a TECC transformer fire on East 31st Street cutting power to 73 customers at 4:30 p.m. Some remained off for 2.2 hours while others regained power shortly after. Additional outages followed due to a traffic accident and a circuit breaker fault. The National Weather Service reported pea sized hail across Odessa Penwell and Midland during Thursday’s system.
