Cuban rebels attacked the National Bank of Cuba in central Havana tying employees, looting no cash, and setting fire to thousands of checks before fleeing. Police and firefighters responded as smoke filled the building but the premises were reported undamaged aside from the burned checks.
A Florida attorney testifies that FCC Commissioner Richard A. Mack owns one sixth of the Stembler Shelden insurance agency through an oral agreement. He details the stock trust and voting rights held by trustee W Y Stembler as the House Commerce subcommittee seeks full records of Mack’s financial ties.
Washington signals a tight Senate vote over raising the out of town letter stamp to 4 or 5 cents. The debate centers on a $747 million annual rate increase and a 3 year 5 cent stamp proposal to fund postal modernization, with experts predicting a margin of one to a few votes.

In Cape Canaveral the Navy resolved a propellant shortage and other minor electrical and plumbing issues that had delayed the Vanguard rocket test. Officials still aim to launch this week to clear the path for an Army attempt to place a second Explorer satellite in Jupiter C orbit next week. The Vanguard will carry a miniature satellite sphere in its nose, mainly to test the three stages in flight, with a relay sphere in orbit as part of the program. The Navy’s first major effort to launch a large satellite is expected in about a month.
COLORADO CITY Texas July report: Mrs. E L Ashford of Westbrook and James Freeman 32 of Stamford died in a three car crash on the highway yesterday.
The boy was found inside a wooden packing box flown from a Uijongbu area supply yard. Soldiers opened the box after hearing sounds. the boy carried a clock a lighter and ration books. He appeared unharmed. the Army said the incident was under investigation and appropriate action would be taken.
Two boys Greg Myres and Wayne Myres were killed and three others, including their parents Dean and Mrs Myres, critically injured in a dusk traffic crash at Main and Pine in Midland. M. W. Littlefield also critically injured. Vehicle strains, front seat torn free, both cars demolished. First year fatalities for Midland. services pending.
President Eisenhower in a news conference urged calm as he forecast an upturn in the economy by midyear. He said improvement in business and employment would be gradual and emphasized cabinet independence, defense of Ezra Benson, and no plan to resign. He denied rumors of illness forcing workload cuts and noted no final stance on major tax cuts pending evidence of need.
The Texas Supreme Court upheld a decision that a civil suit involving South Texas politician George Parr must be retried if Duval County seeks to reclaim the 55,711 acre Robie Ranch. The court denied rehearing with no written opinion. The dispute centers on funding used to purchase the ranch and a 1956 settlement that was later broken.

Hobbs New Mexico Feb 76 A John Wilkerson 36 of Lubbock was killed last night in a pickup crash at Dean Man's Curve on New Mexico State Road 132 about 20 miles north of here. Thomas Smith 31 of Lubbock and J D Morrison of Wellington Texas were injured.
Detroit police captured two young men including the son of an inspector after a gun wielding robbery at a county license office in suburban St Clair Shores. About $10,000 was said to be taken and later recovered. Authorities named Daniel E Jedzenski 19 and Ignatius J Chiros 25 as detained suspects with the Macomb County prosecutor Cecil A Byars confirming their involvement.
