President Bush demands Saddam Hussein withdraw from Kuwait by deadline, with 48 hours to pull troops from Kuwait City and seven days to exit Kuwait, while U S forces prepare for action. Iraqi stance pledges to fight on, citing humiliation as the alternative.
Waves of U.S. warplanes rain napalm and fuel air bombs on Iraqi positions as smoke etcents Kuwait oil wells. Coalition sorties exceed 1 000 over Kuwait with reports of tanks and vehicles destroyed and prisoners taken amid a scorched earth claim by Iraqi forces.
President Bush issues a hard ultimatum demanding Iraq withdraw from Kuwait within a week or face a ground war. He will not negotiate and rejects the Soviet peace plan, calling for Iraqi POW releases, mine removal, and the restoration of Kuwait’s exiled emir.
J Fred Bucy chairman of the Texas National Research Laboratory Commission says the SSC near Waxahachie will spur economic and educational benefits for the Permian Basin. About 1.5 billion of the 8.2 billion project budget will be spent in Texas with much work using Permian Basin methods. The collider aims to complete before 2000 and will study matter by colliding protons at high energy.
