A New Jersey AP report notes a 1886 bill found in Newark raised home repair costs. Carpenters earned 25 cents per hour. The invoice listed four pounds of nails eight feet of pine board and 21 hours of work totaling 5.85 dollars.
In Perkins Oklahoma a grass fire behind a shop triggered heroics by passerby Darrell Porter who stripped his shirt to beat the flames. The volunteer fire department later bought him another shirt.
In Muncie Indiana Police Chief James Carey suspended two patrolmen for three days without pay after they were involved in minor traffic collisions as the city’s new traffic safety campaign began.
Odessa High School announced honor roll recipients for the fall term. Eight seniors from a 288 class include Mary Catherine Armstrong and Linda Kay Wall. Four juniors, 20 sophomores, and 20 additional names are listed with grades of 90 or above.
The Odessa Music Study Club announces the open program moves from Odessa College auditorium to Burnet Elementary School tonight at 8 p.m. The public is invited to hear an operetta based on Sleepy Hollow performed by about 100 Burnet pupils with music by the String Symphonette, drawn from several Odessa schools.
Mrs. Myrtle Sherman 64 mother of Odessa businessmen died at her Coalgate Oklahoma home after a lengthy illness. Funeral services at First Christian Church Coalgate Tuesday afternoon with burial there. Survived by two Odessa sons L B Sherman and Jack Sherman and three other sons Alfred Ray Melvin, plus three grandsons Lloyd Melvin Jr and sisters in Coalgate.
Dr. Orrin E. Klapp a sociology professor at San Diego State College says he has become an oddity because he walks the two miles from his home to campus each day instead of driving and he notes it makes him seem different to children who call him the walking man.
John B. Wimberly 77 died Sunday at his son's home after a two month illness. Funeral services set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hubbard Funeral Home with Rev. R. N. Powers officiating. Burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Wimberly moved to Odessa from Russellville Ark in January. Born July 12 1882 in Cabin Creek Ark he married Clara Nichols in Morrilton Ark. Survived by widow, son Daniel E. Wimberly, sister Emmer Mitchell of Russellville Ark, two nephews, a niece and three grandchildren.
An ill wind story from Des Moines explains a lawyer refused to carpet his tiled office floor. A conspiracy lured him out, his furniture vanished, and burlap covered the tile. He removed the burlap later and plans to use it for leaves next fall.
Crockett Junior High announced the first semester honor roll under Principal G. C. LeCroy. Students with 90 percent or higher include seventh graders Gary Alden through Sherry Wysong, eighth graders including Sandra Ashcraft and Judith Hitt, and ninth graders Sandra Bailey through Myrna Van Etten.
A 46 year old Midland man Clark Berry was in serious condition at Midland Memorial Hospital after a head on crash about 12 40 a m on a country road a mile east of Midland Three other people Benjamin Harris Jr Georgia Allen and Daphine Hooks were also injured but not seriously All suffered fractures Berry s car hit Harris car on Magnolia Camp road Hooks rode with Berry and Allen was a passenger in Harris car Names and ages given reflect the readable details from the Midland dispatch.
Funeral services were held at 3 p m today for Silas Benson Jr 32 of Ozona who died after a fatal knife slash across the throat in Ozona last Tuesday The service was in the Independent Methodist Church with Rev F D Crenshaw officiating Burial followed in Delta Memorial Park Stark Funeral Home handled arrangements Joe Willis 39 of Ozona is in custody Benson was a ranch hand on the J B Parker ranch A War veteran He is survived by his father Silas Benson of Ozona his mother Mrs Rosie Williams of San Antonio one sister Mrs Olivia Sanders of San Francisco and two brothers Shannon Benson of Kerrville and Carnell Benson of Seattle
Johnny W. Mangum, 10, died in Irving Texas after accidentally hanging himself with a chain while playing in a backyard tree. Justice of the Peace Glenn Davies ruled the death accidental, stating the boy slipped from a limb after looping the chain around his neck.

Graveside funeral services were held at 1 p.m. today in Odessa Cemetery for Richie Don Coffman infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Coffman of 1920 East Seventh who died shortly after birth in Medical Center Hospital. Rev. J A Philpot of Calvary Baptist Church officiated with Hubbard Funeral Home in charge of burial. Survivors include the parents and both paternal and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Orval Coffman of Otan and Mr. and Mrs. R D Davis of Pampa.
