Talks Planned On Volcanoes At Sul Ross University

Dr. Fred M. Bullard a UT Austin geology professor and longtime active volcanologist will deliver three lectures at Sul Ross State University next week. The open public talk titled The Birth of a Volcano occurs February 28 at 7 p m in the Science Building Lecture Hall with color slides on Pariutin Volcano born in 1943. Two geology class talks follow February 28 and 29 covering Vulcanology and Mythology and Volcanic Cycles with examples from Vesuvius Etna and global volcanoes including Alaska Mexico and Iceland. Bullard has studied volcanoes worldwide since 1929 and is examining the Great Rift in Craters of the Moon National Monument Idaho with sponsorship by the American Geological Institute.

Police Probe 4 Thefts Here

Eight thefts reported to Odessa police over the weekend include a 1968 model car stolen from Frontier Motor Co. lot at 522 North Texas and a motorcycle stolen from Milton W. Wilkerson of 316 East 42nd. Larry Thomas and L. F. Moore reported bicycle thefts. George Pace’s yard lost a two-horsepower motor. Kenneth Scheible’s car theft yielded stools. Bill Clark at 204 Judkins lost 21 dollars cash a clock and a radio. signs were taken from M. G. Burks’s car at 1472 Tanglewood.

Four Cars Hit In Vandalism In Odessa

Odessa police investigated four weekend vandalism incidents. Jim Blay of Abilene said his car door was kicked in at 1602 North Tom Green. Three local cars showed window damage. Mrs. Joe Filler of 1900 East Seventh reported a broken window. A F Buckley at 1425 Idlewood and Waynel Hite at 1809 Milburn also had window damage. Hite’s car was in the 500 block of East 17th when damaged.

Damages Asked In 2 Lawsuits

Two damage suits filed in 70th and 161st District Courts allege injuries from a January 23 incident and a March 10, 1970 truck fire. Plaintiffs Earl Williams and Tom Hansen Co. seek over $1000 and $4008 respectively from Jerry Smith and Carl Sewell Motor Co. All parties are from Odessa.

Fingers Are Cut At Table Saw Incident

Randall L. Humphries, 10, son of David O. Humphries, 10-07 West 24th, was listed in satisfactory condition at Medical Center Hospital Monday after cutting three fingers on his right hand with a table saw Sunday.

Three Burglaries Being Checked

Police investigated three breakins on Monday. A prowler stole 20 cases of beer and food from Club Rondavoo at 802 Fitch after prying a door. Breakins occurred at Cecilia McMahon's home, 321 East Mable, and at the Odessa Girls Club, 900 South Grant, with no items reported missing.

Falls Injure Two Odessa Children

Two Odessa youngsters sustained injuries from falls on Sunday. Rhonda G. Smith, 12, fractured her left arm falling from a unicycle. Jeffrey K. Rueter, 8, broke his right wrist. Both were treated and released from the Medical Center Hospital emergency ear.

Man and Woman Fined For Theft Case

Two people were freed Monday after paying fines on petty theft charges. Jose Perez Martinez Jr., 26, of Fort Stockton, arrested at Gibson's on West County Road, allegedly took a pair of sunglasses valued at $1.98. Elizabeth Richard Bingham, 21, of Brownfield, arrested at Gibson's on Sunday, accused of taking three balloons worth $1.71. Both pleaded guilty in Justice of the Peace Howard Williams's court and were fined $50 each before release.

Walter Winchell dies at 74 in Los Angeles cancer

Renowned commentator Walter Winchell, famed for his brisk radio openings and the Lepke Buchalter scoop, died at UCLA Medical Center at age 74 from prostate cancer. He had lived largely in seclusion in recent years, with a career spanning 1929 to 1969 across 800 newspapers and a distinctive two dotted shorthand style.
