Parks and Recreation Director Roland Hancock, 60, has less than two weeks left as commissioners abolish his post on Feb 13. Two positions were merged into one acting director role to run the department with a secretary added. Precinct 2 Commissioner Bryan Henderson opposed creating the acting directorship as officials aim to improve relations among parks users, employees, board members, and county commissioners.
Parks officials caution deeper problems from budget cuts after Hancock’s $33 426 job was abolished. Chairman Kelly Godwin said the board’s wishes were ignored by commissioners while Hancock reportedly offered to resign and later talked with the county judge. Alaska Senator Frank Murkowski seeks to amend a ban on exporting Alaska oil to permit shipments of about 200000 barrels a day to Japan. Backed by security, deficit and jobs concerns, the proposal would affect Alaska, the nation, and trading partners Japan and Mexico.
