Laurence Owen, a top American figure skater and Winchester High School senior, died in a jet crash with 15 other skaters and coaches while en route to Prague for a world championship. The tragedy ends a promising era as her mother Maribel Vinson Owen and many prominent skaters and officials perished or were injured in the crash.
AP reports at least five Texans were aboard the Belgian jet liner that crashed near Brussels airport, with 72 people killed overall. Named Texans include Dayton Alexander of Olney, George Young of Olney, Iris Duke of Dallas, Linda Foster of Dallas, and Maurice Herring of Dallas.
Announcement from Washington reports President Kennedy will outline a plan to inject federal funds to spur the economy and cut joblessness. Officials say the move aims for faster spending than planned, with a Cabinet meeting and news conference scheduled to be broadcast.
