Odessa health official warns that condoms and testing are crucial as several area sex workers, linked to Odessa or Midland addresses, have tested positive for AIDS antibodies. Nationally some men have contracted HIV from infected partners, experts say.
Nearly $2,000 was raised for a 2 year old girl believed abused after a community fund started Jan 9 by First State Bank of Odessa employees. Charges against Genovevo Dominguez and Guadalupe Dominguez were later dropped, a development that surprised organizers amid conflicting abuse reports and new medical findings.
A wealthy Lebanese-American, Jack Seikaly, 50, was released unharmed in Moslem west Beirut four days after kidnapping near Beirut University College. Police say his family paid a sizable ransom. the spokesman declined to reveal payment details. Seikaly, uncle of Syracuse basketball star Rony Seikaly, refused interviews. No group claimed responsibility.
Shell Oil Co announces a three year, 15 million project to modernize its Odessa refinery on South Grandview Avenue. About 30 local construction workers will be hired with local contractors handling roughly a quarter of the work. The upgrade consolidates four control rooms into one, reduces staff by eight through attrition, and adds a process computer and Honeywell TDC system to improve efficiency without boosting output. The plant, built in 1958 and acquired by Shell in 1964, produces gasoline, jet fuel and diesel for West Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.
Vietnam veterans watched Platoon at an Odessa theater and spoke of revived memories and emotional pain. Billy Freeman and Jim Nidiffer described lingering wounds while recounting service with units including the 11th Armored Cavalry and the 9th Army Division.
