The Diamond Shamrock company again declined to engage with billionaire T. Boone Pickens, delaying potential sponsorship or partnership talks on a major sports event. Officials cited strategic priorities and schedule constraints as the reason for not pursuing the proposal.
Houston Chronicle reports Gov Bill Clements' budget plan masks more than 500 million dollars in cuts including 3.7 million in college scholarships and halt of state funding for McDonald Observatory and several Texas colleges. Observatory director calls the idea extremely foolish and says it would harm research and tourism in Texas.
Ector County Jail holds 150 prisoners of 172 capacity while Midland County reports full rosters. State system remains closed for fourth day and may reopen Tuesday, risking further backlog as prisoners shift to state facilities. Extra Midland inmates are housed in Mitchell, Scurry, Nolan, Crane and Glasscock counties.
The U S Army Corps of Engineers concludes the water snake will not be harmed if construction proceeds under federal guidelines. The Fish and Wildlife Service proposes reasonable measures to protect the species, as the Stacy Dam project faces delays. Colorado River Municipal Water District agrees to conditions including bulldozing 30 miles of shoreline to expand habitat. The reservoir would flood about half of the snake's primary habitat.
