Washington AP Caroline Kennedy three years old thrilled by the scarred-coated Marine Corps Band at a White House diplomatic reception attended by 240 top diplomats. She watched from the stairs and corridor as President Kennedy and Mrs. Kennedy mingled with guests.
Odessa American publishes daily rates for Odessa and Ector County readers. Odessa electrician Joe Lee Corbin, 22, is jailed in San Angelo on a charge of criminally assaulting a 17 year old girl. Detectives said Corbin denied the charge and refused to sign a statement. He was arrested in Sonora while returning from Mexico with three Coleman residents. no charges against the Coleman men. Corbin reportedly drove the girl from a cafe to a lonely area, then back to the cafe before heading to Mexico. He will be transferred to Tom Green County jail.
In San Antonio the Internal Revenue Service filed a federal tax lien to collect an additional 179,030 dollars in income taxes for 1959 from self exiled promoter Ben-Jack Cage. He fled a 10 year embezzlement sentence and was last known in Brazil. His wife Dorcas Cage is named in the suit for the same amount.
Dexter M. Keezer, an economic adviser for McGraw Hill, told Utah State University conference that America’s economy is poised for broad expansion. He warned that if the public rejects modern abundance and reverts to austere frontier living, growth projections could fail. Keezer urged prudent, generous management of rising prosperity to avoid severe economic fallout.
In Colorado City two men were critically injured in a service station explosion. C. W. Whittemore, 60, father of Odessa Police Sgt. Tom Whittemore, and L. A. Shackleford, 40, operator of the station, were hurt. Shackleford said he heard a gas-like hissing from the grease rack before the blast as an overhead door opened.
Texas pianist Van Cliburn, 27, will perform today in Mexico City marking his first concert there. He spoke at a press conference about music as a bridge to understanding and goodwill among peoples. He plans a concert today and next Sunday at the Fine Arts Palace. U.S. embassy officials introduced him to Mexican press.
A four engine World War II Boeing B17 Flying Fortress was stolen from Brownsville International Airport. The aircraft with limited fuel took off about 6 30 pm Wednesday with only the pilot aboard. Intercontinental Engine Service reported a Miami firm agreed to buy the plane but possession denied until $7 750 due for repairs and fuel is paid.
Dr. Lewis M. Cline, chairman of the Wisconsin geology department, will visit Sul Ross State College February 16 and 17. He will lecture to geology students, participate in conferences and field excursions as part of an American Geophysical Institute visitation program.
Terry Alton Clark, 14, son of Mr and Mrs Tom Clark of Grandfalls, remained in critical condition at Medical Center Hospital with a gunshot wound to the head. Doctors say he will undergo brain surgery, probably Monday, after being accidentally shot while hunting near his home.
Ada Oklahoma businessman Anderson Brown Morris, 41, was found dead in a Big Lake Mustang Motel room with a single shotgun blast to the head. Sheriff Proffitt indicates possible self-inflicted death. a note was left. Morris, an Ada radio station executive, was in Big Lake negotiating for KBLT. He is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter.
Mr and Mrs Julius Johnson and daughter Karen attended funeral services Sunday for Bruce Evans Biggerstaff 83 in Farmersville. Services were at Hills Street Church of Christ with interment at Odd Fellow Cemetery, Dallas hospital death after long illness. Surviving are six daughters and two sons including Marr Biggerstaff and Billy G Biggerstaff of Houston. Bruce Biggerstaff had lived in Farmersville 40 years.
Bell Helicopter claimed eight new world speed and distance records for rotary wings, breaking two from Russia and Czechoslovakia. Pilots Al Averill and Lou Hartwig set multiple marks with light commercial helicopters, Averill flying a 476 mile non stop Texas hop El Paso to Texarkana at 102.4 mph, averaging for a distance record in its class. Hartwig also set three records the previous week with the same aircraft.
P D Coulson Jr of Alpine has been honored with a Citation of Achievement by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy for three years of service as a pharmacist.
Sul Ross State College library hosts a 7:30 p.m. symposium in the fine arts building. The panel includes Jean Moore, Dr. Clifford Casey, Dr. Paul Karoonen, and Dr. Robert Decker. Dean Bevington Reed chairs. Topics cover Africa, power struggles, and dangers to world peace. No admission charge. public invited.
The Bonham Junior High honor roll for the fall semester's final nine weeks was issued by Principal J. E. Whitehead. It lists all students with grades of 9 or higher across ninth, eighth, and seventh grades, including named students such as Jack Baldwin, Barbara Austen, and Gregory Anderson among many others.
