NASA astronauts Bruce McCandless and Robert Stewart untethered from the shuttle and flew free in space using the Manned Maneuvering Unit jet backpack. McCandless reached 320 feet and Stewart 303 feet from the craft as they tested untethered mobility for satellite retrievals.
