A New Mexico State Penitentiary inmate huddles in the cold after surrendering to police Sunday near Santa Fe. The National Guard stands watch as officials regain control after a 36 hour siege by inmates.
Washington AP reports a FBI political corruption probe has implicated eight lawmakers including Sen. Harrison Williams and Reps. Murphy Thompson Myers Lederer Jenrette Murtha and Kelly. Senator Pressler reportedly refused undercover offers to accept bribes. House Ethics Chair Bennett said the probe would expand to include FBI findings as the Justice Department vows an intensive review of leaks by news outlets.
Ayatollah Khomeini condemned the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and pledged unconditional support for Moslem rebels, urging Muslims to oppose aggression. President-elect Bani Sadr also urged aid to Afghanistan and others, while Iran seeks a UN backed inquiry into the shah’s crimes and hostage crisis. The crowd flocked to Tehran to hear speeches as the hostages situation deepened.
In Santa Fe 1100 inmates huddled outside as fires burned and officials reported at least 35 dead with 50 unaccounted for. Gov. King cited overdoses, smoke inhalation and murders. searches continued for victims amid a $50 million rebuild estimate. National Guard and state police restored partial control as guards and staff survived hostage peril.
A gunman sprayed rifle fire at a city bar, killing five patrons and wounding three others. Two patrons subdued the suspect, Barry Chvarak, 21, of El Paso, as a customer sacrificed himself protecting a woman. a third patron died stepping in front of a bullet. Police call it the city’s worst mass killing.
U S National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski arrives in Riyadh to press Saudi leaders for backing in a multinational effort to aid Pakistan as Washington offers 400 million dollars over two years against Afghan Soviet intervention. He meets Prince Saud al Faisal while Saudi Crown Prince Fahd calls Moslems to unite for anti communist aid. Brzezinski and Deputy Secretary Warren Christopher study potential regional cooperation as Pakistan seeks a large aid package to rebuild its armed forces.
