The CAB investigates whether ground control or radar approach caused the fatal New York crash.
Washington June 26 A House Interior and Insular Affairs Committee approved a bill to admit Hawaii as the 56th state. Acting chair Leo W. OBrien said he hoped House passage before Easter recess or soon after, with Rules Committee likely to act quickly. He warned supporters may bypass the panel if delays arise.
Guillo Colasante, 40, the lone survivor of a ditch cave on Pittsburgh's South Side, described thinking of God and family as a retaining wall collapsed trapping three men in a 20 foot trench at a warehouse. Colasante suffered possible fractured left shoulder and ribs as tons of dirt toppled on them.
U S Secretary of State John Foster Dulles travels Europe to discuss a new Western policy on Germany and a possible go it alone mission to Moscow by Prime Minister Harold Macmillan. Macmillan weighing invitation from Soviet Premier Khrushchev with timing near March. Dukes and de Gaulle reportedly skeptical.
Secretary of Defense Neil H. McElroy testified that only one or two missiles from each side could deliver a full strike by year’s end, with both nations lacking confidence in a larger number. In Alexandria, federal judge Albert V. Bryan ordered nine foster children admitted to white schools, overturning a board refusal linked to district integration plans.
A widespread ice storm froze power and communication lines, forcing KOSA TV to go off air from 12:48 p.m. to 2 p.m. and damaging transmitter cables. Schools reopened after a two-day closure as ice melted, traffic signals and cables were repaired, and service gradually returned to normal with an expected high of 53 degrees and a low near 30.
