Light snow is not expected to accumulate as a frigid air mass moves from Alaska into the Permian Basin. Temperatures plunged from 50 to 37 degrees in minutes, wind chills near minus 9, with highs in the mid 20s Sunday through Tuesday.
A strong Arctic cold front dropped sleet and snow across North and West Texas, closing freeways and suspending airline service. In the South Plains a gas line rupture cut service to about 850 homes in Paducah near Lubbock as roads iced over and tractor trailers tangled on highways.
The Senate voted 95 to 5 to reject a 51 percent increase in congressional pay, shifting attention to a House plan to legalize a raise at 30 percent while scaling back. The move, amid public anger, awaits House action under Speaker Jim Wright's automatic-law proposal next week, with no clear resolution yet.
Paraguayan leader President Gen Alfredo Stroessner surrendered power after a coup led by Gen Andres Rodriguez who announced he would take command. Eight..? shelling and gunfire followed as rebels clashed with Stroessner loyalists. Streets emptied in Asuncion where Stroessner had ruled since 1954.
A 14-year-old boy was detained at Midland Freshman High School after authorities say he carried a 5-inch butterfly knife. MISD officials called the incident a non incident while police placed the youth in the Culver Youth Home for alleged prohibited weapon on campus and disorderly conduct.
Texas lawmaker Rep. Eddie Lucio filed a bill to revoke driving privileges for high school dropouts for up to a year unless they re enroll and attend a full semester. The measure, with exemptions for special cases, targets 15 and 16 year olds and seeks DPS notification of dropouts.
