Nixon Plans NATO Visit

The White House said President Nixon hopes to visit NATO countries and perhaps others west of the Iron Curtain before mid April. Exploratory talks occurred over the weekend with potential participants, but no decision or commitment has been made. A possible pre-April trip remains uncertain.

Vietnamese Ambush Kills 28 as Saigon Area Attacked

Viet Cong ambush 28 South Vietnamese soldiers and wounding dozens more near a canal 60 miles southwest of Saigon marks one of the worst recent setbacks for the ARVN. U.S. officers report heavy fighting across several pockets south and northwest of the capital with orders to reinforce the area and deter further advances.

Vietnam to receive 300 US helicopters for Saigon forces

The Johnson and Nixon administrations plan to supply about 300 modern helicopters to South Vietnam to equip 17 squadrons, mainly transports with some armed ships, over two years. Training of Vietnamese pilots and maintenance crews will follow, with total project cost around 98 million dollars in 1969-70 budgets.

Boris Karloff Dies in London at 87 Legacy of Frankenstein

Boris Karloff, famed as Frankenstein’s monster and a staple of horror cinema, died in a London hospital at 87. He began acting in 1910 in Canada, rose to fame with the 1931 Frankenstein, and appeared in films such as The Mask of Fu Manchu and The Body Snatcher. He lived in London in retirement, retaining British citizenship, and also had a Broadway highlight in 1956. He credited being typed as the horror icon as a lifelong boon.

Red Defector Still Hiding

Dutch and Western officials report a Chinese envoy and a defected scientist, Liao, remaining abroad after defecting via the Romanian Embassy in the Hague. His family is believed safe in Hong Kong while U.S. and Dutch inquiries probe espionage links and potential retaliation. Reports note the defection could force a reboot of Chinese espionage networks in Europe.

Ground Forces Claim Downed Planes Amid Jordan Attacks

An Iraqi military spokesman said 14 Israeli jets attacked Iraqi forces in Jordan and that Iraqi ground fire brought down two planes in flames in the Israeli occupied Golan Heights. Tel Aviv denied the claim. Israel reported jets attacking a Jordanian village near the Sea of Galilee and exchange of fire with guerrillas near the border. No Israeli casualties were reported. A railway bridge near Rafah in the Gaza Strip was damaged by an explosive charge.

Nixon Accepts French Plans For Mideast

President Nixon backs a French proposal to break the deadlock in United Nations Middle East peace efforts and seeks parallel Soviet action. He plans to respond to Gamal Abdel Nasser and signal possible renewed diplomatic relations with Egypt. News reports indicate Nasser may discuss direct talks with Israel and proposals for a six point peace plan.
