Two members of Tejano band Intocable died in a vehicle crash while traveling for an event. The accident halted performances and prompted tributes from fans and fellow musicians. Authorities investigated the cause to determine what led to the collision.
Baker Hughes Inc slips to a 4th quarter profit of 6.1 million as it plans to lay off 2,450 workers by March 31 and reduce staff from 32,250 to 29,800 overall. CEO Max Lukens cites continued customer spending declines amid weak oil prices and a weak rig count of 562. The firm cites severance and merger costs as part of charges.
In a closed door session at the Mayflower Hotel the White House lawyers offered Monica Lewinsky an apology on behalf of the president but did not ask questions during sworn testimony. The four hour deposition followed her grand jury account and was videotaped for Senate impeachment considerations.
President Clinton's attorney David Kendall accuses Kenneth Starr of illegal leaking of grand jury material after a New York Times report that Starr found the president could be indicted in office. Starr calls the report troubling and says his office will not comment. A federal judge had previously appointed an investigator into Kendall's prior leak allegations against Starr.
National Oilwell will shut Woolley Tool and lay off 40 employees this month as oil prices decline. CEO officials cited cost cutting while about 1,000 of the company’s 4,000 workers have already been laid off this year. The Odessa area operates six facilities with managers noting moves of staff and plants from Houston to Odessa.
Thousands without power in Panhandle northwest Texas as ice and wind damage lines and poles. Ken Vaughn of Southwestern Public Service says restoration may take days. towns Groom and Claude also affected. Police and volunteers check on residents, shelter available, but few use it. Residents cook on fireplaces amid frigid weekend warmth.
Washington AP notes President Clinton’s 2000 budget paper allocates large sums to defense and space with Texas links. The $261 billion defense outline accelerates V-22 production at Bell Helicopter Fort Worth and aims for a 30 a year peak by 2003. Texas, receiving about $90 billion in 1997 federal payments, stands to gain from lakes, highways, refuges, and related programs.
