Two hostages threaten to die if U.S. attacks Lebanon

Islamic Jihad in Beirut warned two American hostages could be killed if the United States launches an attack on Lebanon. The group said its threat in a typewritten note accompanied by a photo of Terry Anderson targets Washington’s regional interests and vows no mercy. The captives are Anderson and Thomas Sutherland, seized in 1985 in west Beirut. Negotiators strained as Anglican hostage Waite’s fate remains unclear after last public sighting January 20.

Archbishop appeals for help in tracing missing envoy Waite

Archbishop Robert Runcie appealed to Iran's parliament speaker Rafsanjani for assistance in locating missing envoy Terry Waite who disappeared January 20 in Beirut while attempting to free foreign hostages. In Syria Nabih Berri claimed Waite was arrested by Islamic Jihad, though Anglican spokeswoman Keatley called the claim unconfirmed. Berri's statement followed Islamic Jihad threats to kill hostages if the US attacked Lebanon.
