Six Americans return from Iran as 53 hostages remain

Six Americans escaped Iran with Canadian help and met at the State Department and in the Oval Office with President Carter. Officials noted 53 hostages remain in Iran, 50 held for 90 days and three in Foreign Ministry custody. The group thanked Canada for its role as a crowd cheered and signs read Merci Canada.

Masked bandit robs Longview store after mocking clerk

Police report a masked robber entered a Longview convenience store Thursday night and demanded cash. The suspect brandished his forefinger and thumb and, after the clerk asked if he was serious, received an undetermined amount of money.

Canada hints Iran talks held after embassy hostage pullout

Prime Minister Joe Clark said discussions about the roughly 50 American hostages in Tehran were promising and involved at least the United States and Iran. Ambassador Kenneth Taylor described a call prompting final arrangements for the dramatic exit of Canadian diplomats and their six American guests from Tehran. The plan, tied to a U.N. package deal and Iran's new leader, emerged as Ottawa approved the temporary closure and the Americans were moved to the airport by Canadian embassy cars.

Iran marks Khomeini return as hostages held at embassy

Iranians marked the first anniversary of Ayatollah Khomeini's return with marches and prayers outside a Tehran hospital. About 50 American hostages remained in Moslem militants' hands at the U S Embassy as Canada signaled renewed hope for a settlement. Miller refuses to resign amid Textron payments probe

Nighttime hijack ferry carries 65 Cuban refugees to Florida

A 100 foot dredging barge hijacked at gunpoint reached Islamorada with 65 Cubans aboard including 10 children after a 12 hour voyage from Cardenas. The hijackers seized control near Varadero beach at 10 p.m. Wednesday and used a crane to free the vessel. Coast Guard officials confirmed armed crew and a dramatic capsize of the escape plan.
