Odessa publisher denied rehearing in criminal libel case

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals refused a rehearing for John Aldridge of the CCC News in his criminal libel conviction against former judge Bil Deaderick. Aldridge, jailed nine months after a 1959 article, could appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. The order followed Aldridge’s challenge alleging judge bias and improper jury instructions.

Officers Check Five Theft Cases

Police Wednesday investigated five theft cases involving stolen watches diapers and baby items. A resident reported an entry and loss of watches along with four dozen diapers and other goods. Two suspects were reported, with names improperly recorded in the report.

New Mexico Woman Receives Fine and Jail Term

Shirley Ann Bowers, 24, was sentenced to three days in jail and fined after pleading guilty to a charge of driving while intoxicated. She was arrested Tuesday morning by police at the intersection of 2th and Andrews Highway in Rio County Court at Law.

Poll Tax Sales To Top 15000 In Ector County

Ector County Tax Assessor Curtis Winn announced that 1961 poll tax sales and exemptions would likely exceed 15,000, with about 3,000 applications still to process. The Odessa Junior Chamber of Commerce aided with 1,232 late applications. Previous years saw 25,702 in 1960 and 16,749 in 1959.

Damage Trial Settled in 161st District Court

A 865000 damage case ended Tuesday afternoon when the parties settled before noon proceedings resumed. George French of Odessa claimed 65000 from Furrs Super Market at 1218 East Eighth for injuries his wife sustained when knocked to the floor by a Furrs employee. French was represented by John J Walls and Tom Sneed of Odessa. Midland's James Nolan represented the food day and Sunday delegates for the regional winter convention of the Texas Junior Chamber of Commerce.

Investigators continued Wednesday to check leads in the burglary case at Odessa College. Police traced a wallet loss and cash registration, with business manager C. A. Roberson saying the loss was insured.

Civil suit seeks 48000 from Rio Grand Taxi Co

In 7th District Court a civil action seeks 48000 from Rio Grande Taxi Co. Eufrasio Hernandez claims his wife, while employed by the company on December 26, was required to work outside in cold weather. He says exposure caused her virus and 61 days of hospitalization left her unable to work.

Absentee Voting On College Bond Issue Underway

Absentee voting for a 270000 bond to build a library at Odessa College began at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday in the county clerk’s office and runs until 5 p.m. February 14. Only property owners with poll tax receipts may vote. A county-wide election is set at 11 voting places on February 18. Absentee ballots won’t be counted until after the bond election. The measure seeks 270,090 for site, library, foundation, and equipment costs. The college may not raise taxes to fund the library. A Permian High School winter concert will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Permian Auditorium with about 200 students performing. Tickets are 75 cents for adults, 25 cents for students.

Cigarettes Found Tied to Local Burglary Probe

Detectives checked recent burglary cases to see if 65 packs of cigarettes found in a suitcase under a trailer behind Ins home may have been stolen in a break in. J Pannell reported the discovery and police noted the stash could date to the burglary.

Teen-Ager Committed To Gatesville School

A 16 year old Odessa youth was committed to the Gatesville reform school for boys after his probation was revoked by Ector County Court at Law Judges William Wall and Clint Dodson. The youth’s probation was revoked for stealing a car in Odessa on January 23. He had been placed on probation on November 23 after pleading guilty to felony theft of money.

Mothers March Receipts Exceed 7800 in Campaign

Odessa registers coldest winter on record

Odessa sets record cold this winter as monthly averages plunge. January and December average 4.5 degrees, with January 1960 at 40.2 and December 1960 at 20.4. The period shows extreme lows, 25 days at 32 F or below, and a coldest month reading of 15 degrees. The Weather Bureau notes unusual dryness and multiple subzero marks, with historic comparisons to 1940 and prior records.

Receives First Aid After Hospital Stay for Arm Injuries

A 27 year old man, William Relands, was found at the Gdesss Hotel and transported to Medical Center Hospital. He was treated for cuts to his arm and released later Tuesday. Police reported the injuries occurred during an altercation on a city street.
