Two strings of parked trucks used to haul for Portland's two struck newspapers were blown up with dynamite late Sunday night in Portland and Oregon City. Four trucks in each location were damaged with no reported fatalities or injuries.
Explosions hit warehouses in Oregon City and Portland as a pair of newspapers the Oregonian and Oregon Journal press on with a joint edition amid a Stereotypers Union strike. A teen found dynamite near blast scenes while police investigate. About 930 workers idled as resumed output continues with non union staff.
Odessan service station robbery leads to arrest of two Lubback teens in El Paso. Nesl and Reid, 17 and 18, signed statements admitting the hijacking of Space Service Station on West Second. About $100 taken. they carried $67.76 when stopped. Suspects drove from Lubbock after noon Saturday intending to rob. Officers say one used a gun owned by Nesl’s father. Arrests coordinated as detectives moved suspects to Odessa.
ALGIERS AP The French revolt against Exeaceee Charles de Gaulle's Algerian policy collapsed today as Pierre Lagaillarde led about 300 insurgents from Algiers University after eight days of siege. The rebel remnant moved toward a village west of Algiers as French troops remained with De Gaulle and the crowd watched in silence. Lagaillarde, a reserve paratroop lieutenant, claimed “They Were Reds” as population support waned.
The Soviet Union announced a second powerful rocket test over the Pacific ending its current series. The first rocket traveled about 7.76 miles with a 1.24 mile miss. Officials did not disclose the second rocket's distance or proximity to the target.
Kenneth A. Johnson 36 tells police he attacked six people on Hennepin Avenue while claiming Russians were at war with the United States. He tried to stab a police officer, was cornered in a restaurant by three officers, and wounded Lucian Tournear 60 critically along with Julius Johnson 37 and David Nelson 24 in the crowd. Paul Lindsey 44 suffered a minor wound.
In Yubari Japan a coal mine explosion trapped 65 miners with 28 bodies recovered and 14 survivors braving toxic air and fire. Rescue teams battled gas and flames as officials warned of low chances for survivors while noting this was the second major mine incident in weeks and referencing a 1935 deadly Yubari collapse.
Secretary Gates and Air Force Chief White defended U S deterrence saying the missile gap will be offset by missiles on bombers Polaris submarines and balanced defense programs. They rejected claims of a lag while Democrats warned of growing missile power and new calls for a crash program. A new push for a missile czar resurfaced as Power warned of two year gap risks and Medaris warned of space dominance within ten years.
Israeli and Syrian forces fought in ground and air battles for the fourth straight day. Three Israeli and two Syrian soldiers were killed in a four hour pre dawn exchange along the Sea of Galilee southeast shore. Seven Israelis and four Syrians were wounded. one Israeli policeman was killed and two wounded by Syrian fire.
Paris dispatch reports that Gen Charles de Gaulle received full emergency powers from the French cabinet under Article 39 of the 1958 constitution after a brief session. Parliament was convened to ratify the move following Algeria’s factional collapse and a nationwide workers strike showing support for de Gaulle.
A powerful bomb exploded at 2 30 a m in front of a men s store in downtown Buenos Aires. The blast broke windows in a wide area including the Pan American Airways building. No casualties were reported.
