Confessed Captors Beat Pueblo Sailors in North Korea

Law of Chehalis Washington and Hayes of Columbus Ohio described captors as stupid mercurial and anti American. Hayes said his jaw was broken in a beating and that the North Koreans threatened to shoot the crew. Law recalled being beaten with a two by four and a four by four while four North Korean officers watched. They endured 250 to 300 blows and varied kicks and fists. Hayes said he was beaten but not as badly, yet his jaw broke several times and he was kicked in the stomach and groin. They warned the crew would be shot if they prayed. Newsweek critiqued the Pueblo incident, while Navy officials disputed some quotes. The men said they did not feel brainwashed and that food was adequate, though they endured mental distress.
