Justices split but a 4-1 vote favored allowing Thompson, who argued part of his case before the court, to be admitted despite missing the multiple choice section due to a loud sales meeting nearby. Thompson plans to be sworn in soon.

Jobless benefit claims rise to 385000 in mid December
Washington AP reports 385000 Americans filed first time unemployment claims for the week ended December 17, up 20000 from the prior week. The seasonally adjusted mid month total was the third lowest in recent months, compared with 365000 the week ended December 10. In 1982 about 4.519 million were on state benefits.
