County layoffs take effect as $1.8 million cut hits Ector County
The 1983-84 county budget reduction leads to 46 positions cut though only 26 truly lose jobs as many roles were vacant or filled by imminent retirees. The move, part of an emergency plan to offset 880000 in potential revenue loss, affects 30 departments and curtails equipment purchases and travel. Some workers seek new jobs while others shift within the courthouse, including Ruth Marks and Linda Carter adjusting to new roles.

Canceling old papers for a younger town living
A columnist remembers subscribing to hometown papers while away in the Permian Basin. The piece jokes about aging, obituaries replacing news, and hints at an old class reunion in Odessa. It notes the Permian High School class of 1974 planning a 10 year reunion and mentions writing to a local PO box for details. A New Year reflection closes the note with humor about Guy Lombardo.
