Afghans mark anniversary with Islamabad protest

More than 10 000 Afghans chanted death to Gorbachev in Islamabad on the seventh anniversary of the Soviet invasion. Refugees and anti-communist guerrillas joined marches and speeches urging ties cut with Kabul. Police kept protesters from the Soviet Embassy as demonstrations spread to Rawalpindi and Lahore.

Soviet emigre lights Hanukkah after 63 years of exile

David Goldfarb, 68, travels from hospital bed to celebrate his first Hanukkah in 63 years as Jews nationwide light menorahs for the eight day festival. A 32 foot menorah in New York and a rooftop menorah on a van in Ohio symbolize the holiday for Jews in small cities. Goldfarb, treated for diabetes and heart condition, later found to have lung cancer. He recalled refuseniks in Moscow and prayed for their permission to leave as Anna and Yefim Sigalov watched their daughter Rachel join menorah lighting in Memphis. Rabbi Rafael Grossman noted continued Soviet Union exit barriers affecting about 400,000 Jews.

New gun triggers debate

In 1980 machinist Dominick Spadea moved his Westmont New Jersey shop to make an improved MAC-10 style semiautomatic the Partisan Avenger.
