Nigerian held over Christmas Day airliner attack
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, allegedly an al Qaida agent, tried to blow up Northwest Flight 253 from Amsterdam as it neared Detroit. The device contained PETN and sparked a fire when ignited. Passenger Jasper Schuringa tackled him, preventing disaster. Investigations linked him to Yemen and possible terrorist ties. U.S. and UK authorities pursued further leads and heightened security measures.
