A premature baby boy weighing 1 pound 13 ounces born Christmas Day at Gulf Coast Hospital Baytown was refused admittance by major Houston area hospitals due to crowding and staffing. After Temple's Scott & White Memorial agreed to admit, the infant was flown by helicopter to College Station then continued by Army helicopter. The child, in need of a respirator for hyaline membrane disease, faced capacity limits at St. Joseph Hermann Texas Children's and Jefferson Davis Hospitals. The father, Bob Lemley, recently laid off, lacked insurance.
