Texas Citrus Hit Hard by Bitter December Freeze

The Associated Press reports record cold across Texas on Christmas, many cities freezing fruit to trees and breaking water mains in Fort Worth. Lower Rio Grande Valley citrus losses may total about 30 million dollars with around 70 percent left to pick. Forecasters warn of further winter precipitation across Panhandle and West Texas.

Record lows top Brownsville Port Arthur and Victoria

A cold front lowered temperatures across the region with Brownsville posting 28 degrees, surpassing the 1879 record and tied in 1884. Port Arthur registered 22 degrees, breaking the 1933 record of 28. Victoria reported 18 degrees as the cold spell spread inland.

Weather oddly extreme over last decade in US

NOAA meteorologist Tom Karl says six of the past ten winters were extreme with temperatures far above or below normal. He notes three winters were much colder and three much warmer across the contiguous United States in ten years, a pattern he calls unusual and lasting.

Nakasone Named for Second Term as Prime Minister

Yasuhiro Nakasone was elected to a second term as prime minister by Japan's Parliament. He won 266 votes in the 511-seat lower house, while Masashi Ishibashi of the Japan Socialist Party received 113. Analysts expect the pro Western, conservative policies to continue though the LDP's slimmer majority and a strengthened opposition may pressure concessions on the defense budget.

Three wishes granted for Westport girl with cancer

Seven year old Amy Benham, from Westport, had all three Christmas wishes fulfilled including lighting the national Christmas tree with President Reagan. She also received a canopy bed and a large playhouse donated by local shops, a lumber yard, Lions Club, and a VFW post, arranged by Make A Wish Foundation.

Purple Heart awarded to sailor 38 years late

Elbert D. Lewis, a 69 year old Odessa resident and former U S Navy seaman, finally received the Purple Heart eight decades after flames from a Japanese torpedo plane scarred his arms aboard the U S S Reno in the South Pacific. Lewis, then 31, was among 750 crew when a torpedo strike and ensuing fire pierced the Reno. He stood about 30 feet from the crash as rescuers ferried aboard destroyers. his commander had recommended the medal in 1945.
