No Controls Needed Says Council on Interest Rates

Washington AP reports the Cost of Living Council will not impose controls on interest rates now, using voluntary restraints later. The decision drew swift criticism from House Banking Chair Patman, who called it a holiday greeting to customers and accused Nixon of violating the Economic Stabilization Act by exempting exemptions without rationale. The Postal Service announced a 23.9 percent increase in third class mail rates, delayed from Sept. 1970 due to the wage-price freeze. The Price Commission trimmed a proposed federal employee Blue Cross Blue Shield rise from 34.1 to 22 percent, while the council noted mortgage and consumer loan rates had fallen since 1970 and that mandatory stabilization actions are not currently necessary. The council said the Committee on Interest and Dividends is preparing to implement a program. Patman criticized the action as favoring banks over the public amid ongoing wage controls.
