President Johnson arrived at Korat Air Force Base in Thailand near Bangkok and began a tour of the base from which F105 Thunderchief jets conduct strikes against North Vietnam.
U S B52 bombers pounded northern DMZ targets and suspected infiltration routes near Cambodia as Marines conducted a new assault in Quang Tri Province. President Johnson landed at a Darwin refueling stop en route to Rome amid talks of a Pope visit for Vietnam peace efforts.
Bob Hope and 60 entertainers visited the U.S. 7th Fleet off North Vietnam, performing aboard the Ranger and later the Coral Sea during a Christmas tour for American troops. The Ranger chaplain quipped that seasickness spares no humor in wartime.
Louis Washkansky, first heart transplant recipient, is buried in Cape Town. The 53 year old died of pneumonia after his 18 day fight for life following Dr. Christiaan Barnard and team’s groundbreaking transplant of Denise Darvall’s heart. The funeral drew hundreds as Rabbi Israel Abrams praised the life preserving achievement.
Seventeen workers trapped for 19 hours in a Tehachapi mountains tunnel of the California Water Project crawled through a narrow passage to safety. Rescuers dug through debris and reinforced the escape tunnel after a collapsed steel roof left a partial passage. The $33.7 million Carley V. Porter tunnel is part of a 2.8 billion aqueduct system moving Northern California water to the south.

The first day of winter brought a hard freeze with temperatures dipping to 15 to 22 degrees in the region. Forecasters predicted a clear, cold night with readings near 15 degrees and a north wind. Saturday would bring slightly warmer 50s, as Pacific fronts shift and Arctic air remains over West Texas.
