Santa, Hoffa and elves mix in Odessa talk column
In a whimsical Odessa American entertainment piece, Kirk Baird riffs on Santa at the North Pole, elves, and union intrigue with jokes about Jimmy Hoffa. The author recalls interviewing Baird about a mall Santa gig and jokingly speculates on elves unionizing and other pop culture curiosities. Sonya McGillivray’s column is noted to appear Saturdays.

Odessa College finances improve amid oil market concerns
Odessa College shows a stronger financial position with fund balance rising from 6.2 million in 1997 to 11.6 million for 1998. Independent audits by Johnson Miller and Co. gave unqualified favorable opinions for OC and ECISD. Oil price declines and tax revenue drops may tighten future budgets, though operating reserves meet recommended levels. ECISD reports a 31 million general fund balance, down from last year due to capital projects but $10 million below budget for those plans.
