U S District Judge Edward Rafeedie acquitted Dr Humberto Alvarez Machain in the 1985 kidnapping and torture murder of DEA agent Enrique Camarena. The ruling came as prosecutors vowed to appeal. Alvarez, 45, cried as the verdict was read. co defendant Ruben Zuno Arce’s trial continues.
The Supreme Court agreed to review a Wisconsin ruling striking down the state hate crime law, part of a nationwide debate over enhanced penalties for bias crimes. A decision is expected by July, while other actions included easing challenges to federal property seizures tied to drug crimes.
Odessa endured a white Christmas with up to four inches of snow. Most area schools closed due to conditions, but warmup to around 40 degrees and melting snow was expected today. Weather official Eddie Brite said the snow threat was over though some ground remained for snowmen. Police reported nine minor accidents since midnight Sunday, with no special severe-weather mobilization.
Former San Antonio mayor Henry Cisneros said he is not interested in being appointed to succeed U S Senator Lloyd Bentsen as governor Ann Richards plans to choose an interim appointee within about a week. Cisneros cited family reasons and stated he told Richards not to appoint him.
A Odessa grand jury did not indict three Odessa Police officers over a July 27 Whataburger altercation. Eight youths were indicted on felony aggravated assault charges. The shift in the case came after hearings in 70th District Court led by Assistant District Attorney Mike Griffin.
