Program cuts may increase infant deaths
Kathleen Newland of the Worldwatch Institute warns that cuts in food stamps and nutrition programs for women and infants could push the U.S. infant mortality rate higher. The report notes reversals in places like the Soviet Union, Brazil, and Washington, D.C., and cites malnutrition as the root cause, with one in 10 U.S. babies dying before age one.

Fish oil may cut cholesterol and clot risk
CHICAGO AP A diet including salmon and salmon oil lowers cholesterol and triglycerides and reduces platelet clotting potential. Dr William E Connor of the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center reported at a Chicago meeting that for normal subjects cholesterol fell, with larger drops in those with high readings, and clotting tendency diminished, suggesting heart attack and stroke risk may be reduced.
