UT Permian Basin stays in UT System as Sul Ross joins expansion
A Texas higher education plan would keep the University of Texas of the Permian Basin under the UT System while Sul Ross State University joins an expanded Texas State University System. The Select Committee on Higher Education approved a framework to consolidate governing boards into five regional bodies, with UT and Texas A&M retaining their boards. The plan, ready for the 1987 Legislature, would group Northwest Texas around Texas Tech and Southeast Texas around the University of Houston, and expand the Texas State system to include multiple campuses such as Angelo State, East Texas State, Sam Houston, Sul Ross, and others. SCHE Chairman Larry Temple said boards would reduce program duplication across institutions.
