Insurgents Kill Iraqi Police Generals as Elections Loom

Insurgents killed and wounded police and soldiers in attacks across northern and central Iraq as security forces brace for nationwide elections set for January 30. Brig. Gen Razzaq Karim Mahmood and Col Karim Farhan were among the slain officers, while 14 American troops were wounded in separate incidents. A U S warplane dropped a hazardous device near an insurgent position in Mosul after an ambush. The attack underscores focused efforts to derail the vote despite officials saying preparations remain on schedule.
