Cuban ex prisoner backs U S radio in bid for truth

Armando Valladares, freed after 22 years in a Cuban jail, urged U S senators to end the filibuster against Radio Marti. He argued information is a basic human right and urged support for the government sponsored station to counter Soviet influence. Sen. Cuba expands troop presence in Angola to about 30,000

CIA estimates that Cuba has sent an additional 10,000 troops to Angola, raising its total to about 30,000. U.S. officials note the move may relate to rising combat activity by South Africa and Angola's anti communist rebels. The arrangement complicates Namibia independence talks and reflects broader regional tensions. Angola paid Cuba and other Soviet bloc countries $1.8 billion last year for assistance, a figure not publicly commented on by either government.
