Research on lie detector methods raises countermeasure concerns
A congressional study from the Office of Technology Assessment warns surreptitious tactics such as tongue biting and drugs could foil polygraphs, urging field and lab research to curb countermeasures. It notes federal use more than tripled to about 23,000 tests, with NSA planning only a small pilot. The report says scientific validity of polygraphs remains unproven, with guilty-detection rates ranging from 35 to 100 percent.
