Illinois weighs cost of mind boggling atom smasher project
Illinois Gov. James R. Thompson said the state would seek 300000 to study siting a 2 billion atom smasher in the Batavia area. Several states, including Colorado Utah Minnesota Texas and New York, compete for federal funds as the massive accelerator would span about 32 miles in circumference, underground.
