Connally Denies Pressuring Texas Regents Over Contract

Gov. John Connally rejects claims he dictated the withdrawal of an El Paso architectural contract for Texas Western College. He accepts regent John Redditt’s resignation, defends no undue pressure, and says the matter will be discussed as the regents meet Saturday. Redditt says the governor influenced the board. Connally says there was no such influence. He notes the Nesmith, Lane contract was pending federal funds and decisions remained with the board. He plans to name a successor soon and asserts no “rubber stamp” authority.
